What Vinyasa Is
Vinyasa — sometimes called "Flow" — is a style where each movement is paired with an inhale or an exhale. You inhale to rise, exhale to fold; inhale to lengthen, exhale to twist. The class becomes a kind of moving meditation.
What a Vinyasa Class Feels Like
- Length: 60 or 75 minutes
- Pace: Moderate to brisk. You will work up a sweat.
- Postures: Sun Salutations, Warrior series, balancing poses, twists, backbends, occasional inversions, deep stretches at the end.
- Music: Yes — instrumental, world, or ambient depending on the teacher
- Best for: People who want an athletic class with a meditative feel
How Hard Is It?
Vinyasa is the most challenging of our regular weekly classes. If you are completely new to yoga, take a couple of Beginners or Hatha classes first to learn the foundational shapes. Then come to Vinyasa and you will follow along well.
That said, we always offer modifications. The teacher will demonstrate easier and harder versions of postures, and you choose what serves your body that day.
What Vinyasa Does for You
- Builds full-body strength (especially core, arms, shoulders)
- Increases cardiovascular fitness
- Improves flexibility, especially hamstrings and hips
- Sharpens mental focus — you cannot think about email while flowing through a sequence
- Burns 250-400 calories per class
