What Restorative Is
Restorative Yoga is the most passive practice we teach. Every posture is fully supported with props — bolsters under your knees, blankets behind your back, blocks holding up your arms. You do not work; you melt. Each pose is held for 5-15 minutes while the teacher walks the room offering small adjustments.
What a Restorative Class Feels Like
- Length: 60-75 minutes
- Postures held per class: 4-6 (yes, that is all)
- Effort: Zero. You are supported in everything.
- Room: Dim, warm, often with quiet music
- Result: The deepest rest you have had in months. Many students fall asleep. That is fine.
When to Take Restorative
- After a stressful or sleepless week
- While recovering from an injury or illness
- During a difficult life transition (grief, divorce, job change)
- If you are perimenopausal or menopausal — particularly helpful for sleep disruption
- The day after an intense workout, race, or hard physical day
- Anytime you feel burned out
How Is It Different From Yin?
In Yin Yoga, you sink into a moderate stretch and hold it — there is mild discomfort and sensation. In Restorative, the props eliminate all stretch and effort. You are simply held. Both are slow and quiet, but Restorative is even more passive.
